WHITESMITH
We are all familiar with what a blacksmith does for his living. These men are often called farriers. The craft of the Whitesmith is not so well known these days but there were quite a number of them in Armagh, particularly in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A Whitesmith is a worker in tin and, in this case, the word tinsmith was often used. However, a Whitesmith was also a finisher of metal goods usually made from iron. A person who makes articles out of metal, especially tin. Whereas a Blacksmith works with hot metals, a Whitesmith works with cold.

WILD GEESE
A term applied to Irish exiles to the Continent of Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries. Originally denoting those who became soldiers in continental armies it was later extended to refer to their descendants.

WILL
A document stating how a person wants real and personal property divided after death.

WITNESS
A witness is an individual present at an event such as a marriage or the signing of a document who can vouch that the event took place.

WORSTED
A woollen fabric or stuff made from well-twisted yarn spun of long-staple wool combed to lay the fibres parallel.

WRIT OF ATTACHMENT
A court order authorizing the seizure of property sufficient to cover debts and court costs for not appearing in court.

WRIT OF SUMMONS
A document ordering a person to appear in court.

WRITS
Letters issued in chancery which conveyed royal orders. Original Writs sealed in chancery were issued to particular courts with respect to specific actions in law.
