Portadown Soldier Killed In Action

Lance Corporal Doherty, Portadown, was killed in action February 22nd. He came from India some time ago, and had about 6 years service in the army. In a letter sent to his mother, Private D. Grimley, says:

“Dear Mrs Doherty, just a line to let you know your son is dead, and I am glad I was not far away from him when he passed away. You will feel proud at having a son who died fighting for his home and country. I am sorry at his death, but the best of friends must part.” Lance Corporal Doherty was struck by a bullet and only lived a short time. He passed away without pain and on him was found the box presented to him by Princess Mary. He was promoted a few days before his death. Private R. Dawson, has also sent a letter telling how his comrade died the death of a British soldier.
