Portadown soldier's death
The relatives of Lance Corporal W. H. Armstrong, R.I.R., have received official notification that he was killed in action on 11th March. For seven years deceased served in India, and was employed at the Portadown Post Office when called to the colours. Of a quiet and kindly disposition he was very popular with those who know him. He landed in France in the middle of last August, and took part in the retreat from Mons. For conspicuous bravery on the battlefield he was awarded the distinguished medal for a brilliant act, which may never be made known. In his last letter home he said that he was glad to be in France fighting for his King and country, and he hoped to be with his regiment when the last shot was fired.
