The Parish of St. John the Evangelist
Sloan Street,
Lurgan.
The church is located in the old John Street school, which was built in 1888. In 1935 the education authority transferred the school building to Shankill Parish church and it became known as Sloan Street Mission Hall and then a daughter church of Shankill Parish. The building stayed under the wing of Shankill until St John's became a parish in it's own right, the Parish of St John the Evangelist was constituted on March 1, 1968. Many alterations and renovations have taken place since the building became a church.
The stained glass window in the church was dedicated in 1963. It came from the church St Charles the Martyr, Hollymount, County Mayo, since that church was no longer used. In the entrance to the church, there are 2 memorials to the former pupils of both John Street and George Street schools, which now make the Carrick School in Sloan Street.
The seating of the church came from St. Mary's in Belfast which was being refurbished. Also, a new rectory and parochial hall have been added to the church.
Our thanks to Martin McGoldrick, Leonard McCreanor and Rev. Stanley G. Bourke for providing this information.
