LURGAN PETTY SESSIONS

The Petty Sessions were held in the courthouse on the 7th inst. before Messrs. John McNally, J.P. (in the chair); T. D. Gibson, R.M.; and James Johnston, J.P.

Catherine Spellman, North Street, Lurgan sought an order for the destruction of a ferocious dog belonging to a neighbour named Arthur Byrne. Mr. T. G. Menary prosecuted, and Mr. J. C. O’Reilly defended. Evidence was given to show that the dog had bitten complainant’s child on the face, and that it had also bitten other persons. Their Worships ordered the animal to be destroyed.

Edward Gannon, Edward Street, summoned Lizzie Webb for having, by false pretences and with intent to defraud, obtained possession of a glass case, the property of complainant. Mr. Menary defended, and the case was dismissed.

Robert Mills, Bleary, was summoned by his sister, Mary Ann McComb, for assaulting her at her house in Victoria Street, Lurgan, on the night of the 21st ult., when he beat her on the face and threatened to have her life and that of her husband. Mr. Hugh Hayes prosecuted, and Mr. Menary defended. The prisoner was sent to jail for one month, and ordered to find bail for his future good behaviour at the expiration of that period, or undergo an additional month’s incarceration in default.

Ellen Sewell summoned Thomas Newell, Banogue, County Down, for assaulting her. Newell was sent to jail for one month.

Alice Ann Lennon summoned her brother, John Lennon, for having beaten her for pulling apples in a garden which was their joint property in Derryinver. The matter was left to the arbitration of the parish priest.

Daniel Burns, Ballynary, was prosecuted for making use of threatening and provoking language towards Robert Coleman, Ballynary, and his family, and the Court sentenced the defendant to one month’s imprisonment, in default of finding two sureties in the sum of £5 each for his good behaviour for twelve months.

District-Inspector Hill prosecuted John Farnon, Derryloist, for an aggravated assault upon James McDonnell, aged 74. Mr. Menary appeared for the prisoner, who was brought up in custody. The injured man declined £5 compensation, and the prisoner was sent to jail for a month.
