THE DEATH OF DEAN McCONVILLE
The diocese of Dromore laments the death of its venerable Dean, Very Rev. Michael Blake McConville, P.P. (Lurgan) and Vicar-General, on February 24, aged 80.
A native of Rathfriland, he was ordained at Maynooth College in June, 1872.
After various curacies he was promoted to the pastorate of Lurgan in 1897 and worked with boundless zeal. Not only did he erect the spire of St. Peter's Church in that town, but he also erected a commodious presbytery, as well as national schools and an industrial school. On the formation of the chapter of Dromore, in 1918, he was appointed Dean, and was held in affectionate esteem by his fellow Canons and priests. As a memorial of his golden jubilee, in 1922, the parishioners erected a magnificent high altar in marble in the
parish church at a cost of £300.
For a few years past his health had been very indifferent, and the end was not unexpected. Solemn Office and Requiem Mass presided over by Most Rev. Dr. Mulhern took place in St. Peter's, Lurgan, on February 26, followed by interment in Dougher cemetery.
