Old Aghagallon is an almost perfectly shaped circular cemetery, there are sufficient church ruins to give an indication to it's original shape and size. The site is mentioned in the taxation records of Pope Nicholas IV around 1288 where taxes were spend funding the crusades. Aghagallon is named 'Capella de Enacha' at that time and its head monastery was Moville.

By 1622 the church was reported as being ruinous and since the late 17th century the churchyard has been used by all religious denominations. The major landowners of time in the area are buried here, the Turtle and Best families occupying the two naves. Other names you will find here include: Bullick, Cousins, Elliott, Falloon, Gilbert, Lavery, McConville, McDonald, McVeigh, Moffett, Smyth and Thompson.
