Portadown News: 26th August 1916:
Mrs M. A. Pentland, Mary Street, has received a letter from a soldier at the front stating that Pte Pentland took part in the attack July 1st, and that he is missing believed killed. The writer continues:- “Words fail to express how sorry I am at the loss of William, He was like a father to us out here, and the good advice he gave us was the means of keeping a lot of us out of danger. There was not a braver soldier in the ranks, and he was loved by all his comrades. We who are left of his platoon tender to you are deepest sympathy, and pray that God may comfort you in your great trouble.”
