John McMahon was wounded during the battle of Le Cateau on 26th August 1914; he was then transferred to Royal Victoria Netley Hospital where he died from his wounds. He had a long military career behind him before the Great War, serving with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers he had seen service in the Boer War 1886 to 1889, the 2nd Boer War 1889, he then served in Ireland from 1902 to 1911, Crete and Malta 1907 to 1911, China 1911 to 1913, India 1913, finally arriving in France for the Great War on 23rd August 1914. Throughout these years of service, John McMahon had the same army number, 6486, this would suggest that he had unbroken service covering his full military career.
