Letter from Private James McKerr to his mother: 16th December 1914:
Dear Mother, just a few lines to let you know I arrived in Winchester and all is well, and we had the King and Earl Kitchener up here today speaking to us before we go out to the front, we are leaving this week some time, I think it will be Saturday before we go so you can address your letter to me here and if we be away it will follow me up alright and I went to see about leaving you some money, but I was too late the names went on Monday, well it will be all the same if anything happens to me you will get it all in a lump and if I come home again you are welcome to it all and you can tell Samuel to tell G. Smith that I went out to fight for my Country like a man and I trust that I will return again to greet you all, and tell all the boys I was asking about them. This is all I have to write to you, write soon, God be with us and we will meet again. From your loving son, J. McKerr.
